Connecting via Serial - Windows

Before programming anything else, let's connect the Gumstix to your existing windows machine. You need a terminal program such as hyperterm, minicom, kermit, or PuTTY. If the Hyperterminal included in Windows freezes, you can download the (free) HyperTerminal Private Edition.

WARNING: TeraTerm on the Windows platform is know to have a broken kermit implementation which will cause corruption in files it transfers. Do not use TeraTerm to transfer files to u-boot for flashing, or you run severe risk of rendering your gumstix un-bootable

To connect the Gumstix to windows you can use the serial port in the tweener board. This board also has a power jack to power the Gumstix. Many computers don't have a DB-9 connector anymore and rely on the USB serial bus; if that is your situation you will need a USB to Serial converter.

NB: You will need a Null Modem cable to connect between the Gumstix and the PC. If you are using the console-st expansion board then use the serial port closest to the power connector. (A single letter L is displayed if you are in the other serial port). If you're using the console-vx board, use the middle serial connector.

1. Run “%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe".

2. Choose name for HyperTerminal session.

3. Select com port to be used.

4. Configure HyperTerminal for:

    Bits per second: 115200
    Data bits: 8
    Parity: None
    Flow control: none

5. Open the conection to the port.

6. Plug the power adapter into the power jack of the tweener. When powered, you will see the computer booting in Hyperterminal. If you do not see the device booting or the logon prompt press and hold the reset button on the Gumstix.

7. Log in for the first time with username "root" (no quotes) and the password "gumstix" (again, no quotes).
